Melissa Mc Kenna

Counsellor & Psychotherapist Adults

Biography

Melissa is a fully accredited psychotherapist who has worked in a range of charitable organisations and community health settings in Ireland and the UK over the last ten years. She is educated to Masters level, with specific specialisms in integrative therapy and gender and sexuality studies. Melissa has extensive experience working with both adolescents and adults from diverse backgrounds and strives to create a therapeutic space where clients can explore their needs and gain an understanding of their inner strength and resilience.

Melissa has expertise working with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, addiction and bereavement and has helped many clients to reduce self-harm, understand intrusive thought patterns and manage complex relationships. She adopts an integrative approach that draws from person-centred therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, affirmative therapy and solution-focused therapy in order to meet the cognitive, emotional and psychosocial needs of her clients. She also utilises a range of therapeutic techniques in her practice, including breathwork, polyvagal exercises, visualisation and mindfulness. Melissa would welcome the chance to work with clients who have experienced historical or recent traumas or complex bereavement, or are experiencing generalised anxiety, low self-esteem, compulsive behaviours or emotional dysregulation.

“My aim as a therapist is to create a space wherein people can begin their journey towards empowerment, self-compassion and resilience. Establishing an empathic alliance with the people I meet in the therapy room is paramount. My experience working with clients from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds has helped me create an approach to therapy that values individuality and affirms diversity. The therapeutic process begins with courage and paves the way towards understanding and fortitude”.
